The Nail Grinding Discussion

"But, I didn't say I was ready to have my nails done..."
"I know. But, you need to have your nails done."
"But, I just HAD them done!"
"That was a whole week ago, Day."
"But, I don't think it really neeeeeds to be every SINGLE week that we do this."
"Trust me, Day, weekly is the way to go with this one."
"Well... I'm not going to be helpful."
"Don't worry, I'll do all the work... you just go back to your nap-time."
"See?? You just said it... it's my NAP-time... not my NAIL-time."
"I know, but, it's easiest and quickest when you're relaxing like this."
"But, maybe I don't want to be relaxing. And maybe I wanted to do other things today instead of nails. Like, maybe I wanted to play frisbeeee. And maybe I wanted to go for a rii-iiide. And maybe I wanted to be inventorying the treat staaaasshhh..."
"I think you've confused the word inventorying with the word devouring, Day."
"Whichever... I just mean that I have WAY more important things to be doing!"
"And you'll still have enough time to do those things and more... but even better, you'll get to do them with well-managed, healthy nails that won't get snagged or torn while you're playing!"
"But... I really just want to be licking the window."
"First of all... that's gross. But, I'm sure you will be... just as soon as we're done."
"Mamas are so unfair... grumble, grumble....."

  1. Too cute, I love this! We used a dremmel tool on our hounds, whippet and IG too. They were all fawn so it was hard to see their quick. They didn't love it but it was better then the sound of the clipping.

    1. It's scary when the nails are dark and the quick not visible... The dremel has saved us a LOT in the nerves department! ;)

  2. You brave woman. Nails are the only thing I don't do. I have large, double-coated German shepherds. I brush, bathe, blow out, trim feet, clean ears, and brush teeth. But I'm always afraid I'll cut too close so I pay someone else to do it.

    1. I hear you! I was beyond terrified and panicked when I first started doing Day's nails... thankfully, he is a vey patient boy! I actually wrote a guest blog post on overcoming my fear of nail-trimming here, in case you are interested: http://nlga-homesforhounds.blogspot.ca/2014/03/adventures-in-nail-care.html

PS: Beautiful pup in your photo!! :)

  3. Wow, so relaxed! Mort came with some pretty intense fears programmed into his crazy Kelpie brain, so I had to train him to use a nail file board (put a blog tutorial up about it earlier this year). Even with about half a year + of desensitization on both clippers and Dremel, we still had problems (not to mention a few really horrific vet visits!). Good thing he adores using the file board, because it's so much better and healthier than having to knock him out all the time!

What I would give for the relaxation pictured though - it's like my other dog and so much easier to deal with :)

  4. Poor Mort, but lucky for him he has someone patient and persistent enough to find a way and help him through the stress of nail-time! I'm thankful that Day is just naturally so laid-back... it really helped me to get over my own nerves of trimming his nails and now it's just a quick and simple part of our routine. :)

  5. @Gilly R Do you use a dremel to file your pups nails? Or a different tool? My girl Ziva is terrified of nail clippers and it was very stressful to try and cut them so we've resorted to filing her nails but we've been using human files which wear out quickly...any ideas? Our boy has no problem with the clippers his are easy to cut. :-)

  6. I do use a Dremel for Day's nails Aavery... I was absolutely terrified of trying to use clippers on his black nails so I was glad to have discovered grinding. If Ziva is already used to filing she may take easily to the dremel and I imagine it would save a lot on time for you. I was forewarned that some dogs are not keen on the noise or the heat but when we started I just made sure to have some music playing and I am careful to only spend one or two seconds on each nail at any given time; now it's just become a second-nature sort of thing for us. :)
